Why Buy Now Pay Later matters for BFCM Deals 2026
BFCM 2026 runs from Thanksgiving Thursday, November 26, through Cyber Monday, November 30. Black Friday is November 27. The number that matters:
BNPL drove $1.03 billion in US online spend on Cyber Monday 2025, up 4.2% year over year, per Adobe. Only stores with a BNPL option at checkout can compete for that spend.
- Thanksgiving: Thursday, November 26, 2026
- Black Friday: Friday, November 27, 2026
- Cyber Monday: Monday, November 30, 2026
- Mobile share: 79.4% of BNPL spend on Cyber Monday 2025 came from phones (Adobe).
That mobile share sets one rule. The BNPL badge and installment text must render cleanly on a phone. Test both before November 20.
Provider-run BNPL plugin vs merchant-run payment plans
Provider-run BNPL means a lender such as Affirm, Afterpay, or Klarna approves the shopper, pays you upfront, and collects the installments.
Merchant-run payment plans mean you set the schedule and your gateway charges the customer’s saved card on each due date.
The first shifts risk to the lender. The second avoids the BNPL fee and keeps the customer with you.
| Factor | Provider-run BNPL | Merchant-run payment plans |
|---|---|---|
| Who approves the customer | The provider, using its own eligibility check | You. No outside check |
| Who carries default risk | The provider | You |
| Fee | Per-transaction fee, near 6% + $0.30 for Affirm and Afterpay in the US per third-party summaries | Plugin license plus your normal gateway rate |
| Who owns the customer relationship | Shared. The provider’s brand appears and the provider collects payments | You. Checkout, emails, and collections stay with you |
| Setup time | Provider account approval, then plugin setup | Install, build the plan, test the gateway. No provider approval |
| Best for | Higher-ticket and impulse orders where shoppers want a known brand | Deposits, custom orders, courses, B2B, memberships |

The 10 best buy now pay later plugins for WooCommerce
BNPL WooCommerce plugins cover three ways to offer pay-over-time in WooCommerce. Provider-run BNPL (WooPayments, Stripe, PayPal, Klarna, Affirm, Afterpay, Sezzle) pays you upfront and carries default risk, for a fee of roughly 5% to 6% in the US. Card-based installments (Splitit) hold the full amount on the shopper’s card.
Merchant-run plans (Payment Plans for WooCommerce, WooCommerce Deposits) add no BNPL fee and leave the risk with you.
Fees and terms were checked on September 30, 2026.

That makes it one of the quickest launches for single-country stores.

10. WooCommerce Deposits: best for made-to-order and bookable products

WooCommerce Deposits lets shoppers pay a deposit now and the balance later, or follow a payment plan you define in days, weeks, or months. It does not charge the balance automatically.

| Spec | Detail |
|---|---|

- Scalapay: Offers 3 or 4 interest-free installments to European shoppers. Stripe lists it at 5.99% + 45¢.
- Riverty: Europe’s former AfterPay, not Cash App Afterpay. It offers 14-day and 30-day invoices, installments, and Pay in 3 in DACH, the Nordics, the Netherlands, and Belgium.
Riverty says it pays out the full amount and takes over default risk.
- YITH WooCommerce Deposits / Down Payments: Deposit plus balance orders. YITH’s help center describes charging the balance automatically to customers’ cards.
BNPL Fee Break-Even Calculator
BNPL pays off only if enough BNPL orders are ones you would not have won otherwise. Every BNPL order carries the extra fee. Only the new orders add new margin.
The break-even share is the portion of your BNPL orders that must be new sales before the fee stops costing you money.
Required incremental share = extra BNPL fee ÷ contribution margin
Here is where the formula comes from.
🡪 Take 100 BNPL orders.
🡪 All 100 pay the extra fee, whether the customer was new or not.
🡪 The new orders also add margin.
Break-even is the point where the margin from new orders equals the fees on all orders.
Two terms, defined:
- Extra BNPL fee: the BNPL fee minus your normal card fee, as a percentage of the order value.
- Contribution margin: what’s left of the order price after product cost, shipping and your normal card fee, before the BNPL surcharge.
| Extra fee vs card | Margin 20% | Margin 40% | Margin 60% |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.5% | 7.5% | 3.75% | 2.5% |
| 3% | 15% | 7.5% | 5% |
| 6% | 30% | 15% | 10% |
Read the table like this…
At a 3-point extra fee and a 40% margin, at least 7.5 of every 100 BNPL orders must be sales you would have lost. At a 6-point extra fee and the same margin, that rises to 15 of every 100.
The fee in this table is the surcharge over your normal card cost. On WooPayments in the US, the fixed part of the fee is $0.30 for both cards and BNPL, so it drops out of the math.
How to Choose Buy Now Pay Later WooCommerce plugins
| Your store | Model that fits | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Average order $35 to $500, US or Canada, margin 40% or more | Provider-run pay in 4: Afterpay, Klarna or Affirm | The fee is a small share of a healthy margin. The provider underwrites the customer and collects the installments. You’re paid in full at checkout. |
| Average order $500 to $5,000 | Provider-run with monthly terms | Affirm offers plans up to 36 months and carts up to $30,000 on WooPayments. Afterpay’s US cap is $4,000. |
| Germany, Austria, the Netherlands or the Nordic countries | Klarna | WooPayments offers Klarna in all of these. |
| Margin under 30% | Merchant-run plans | The break-even share above climbs past 10% at a 3-point fee. |
| Custom orders, courses, made-to-order, B2B | Merchant-run deposit and balance | WooPayments says BNPL methods can’t be used for B2B sales. Affirm, Afterpay and Klarna also exclude subscription products. |
| Customers outside your account country | Merchant-run plans | On WooPayments, BNPL works only when the billing country matches your account country and the customer pays in that country’s currency. |
| You can’t absorb missed payments | Provider-run | The provider collects the installments. With merchant-run plans, unpaid balances are yours. |
BFCM 2026 Buy Now Pay Later WooCommerce Checklist
These dates are our recommendations, not vendor deadlines. Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, 2026. Black Friday is November 27. Cyber Monday is November 30.
| Deadline | Task |
|---|---|
| Fri Oct 9 | Pick the model. Apply for provider accounts. Check eligibility first: on WooPayments, BNPL needs a billing country and currency that match your account country. Affirm allows only US English, Canadian English or Canadian French on your site. Confirm your products aren’t on a provider’s excluded list. |
| Fri Oct 23 | Install on staging. Test Checkout Blocks, HPOS, coupons, tax, shipping and refunds. WooPayments supports test mode for BNPL. Keep the test cart above Affirm’s $35 minimum. |
| Fri Nov 6 | Turn on product-page and cart messaging. Update your refund policy and terms. On WooPayments, refund windows are 120 days for Affirm and Afterpay, and 180 days for Klarna. Don’t promise refunds beyond them. |
| Fri Nov 13 | Place three live test orders per gateway. Confirm reminder and failure emails. Refund each test order. On WooPayments, the transaction fee isn’t returned. |
| Fri Nov 20 | Freeze changes. Brief support on BNPL refund handling, including Klarna’s 21-day return inquiry rule. |
| Nov 26 to 30 | Monitor declines, disputes and support tickets daily. If a dispute opens, evidence is due in 13 days for Klarna, 14 for Afterpay and 15 for Affirm. |
| Dec 1 to 7 | Report BNPL share of orders, AOV vs non-BNPL and refund rate. Use the numbers to judge whether your break-even share looks reachable. |
EU note. New EU consumer credit rules start applying on November 20, six days before Thanksgiving. If you sell in the EU, ask your provider what changes at checkout before your November 20 freeze.
Wrap Up
If you sell mostly $35 to $500 items at a healthy margin and want the fastest launch, turn on Affirm, Afterpay or Klarna through WooPayments. If your margin is thin, you sell across borders, or you take deposits on custom work, use merchant-run plans and keep your card rate. If your carts run above $500, add a provider with monthly terms and check its fee against your break-even share.
See Payment Plans for WooCommerce pricing and read the documentation before you set up your first plan.
